Civil servants may see their minimum wage rise in 2027; however, the figures are still under discussion. It is on 6 October that the Government will meet with the three main public sector trade union organisations to begin negotiations, at a time when the unions are calling for improvements beyond those already planned.

Planned increases

The agreement signed between the Government and the trade unions provides for a pay rise of 2.3 per cent, equivalent to an increase of €60.52. If these figures are maintained, the public sector’s basic pay will rise to €995.51. This figure remains below €1,000, and the unions therefore intend to put forward further demands.

The unions are also calling for an increase in the meal allowance, with the aim of raising it to €10 per day, tax-free. Currently, the meal allowance stands at €6.15 and the current agreement provides for an increase of 15 cents per year until 2029; in other words, by 2027, workers would receive €6.30 per day.

End of negotiations

Negotiations are set to begin during a decisive week for the preparation of the State Budget. The Government’s proposal is due to be presented on 9 October, although the legal deadline for submission is 12 October.

Although a compromise has already been reached on the pay rise in 2027, the final figures may turn out to be higher than those previously agreed, depending on the negotiations between the Government and the trade unions.
