Two families can invest the same €500,000 in Portugal and need very different advice.

One wants a European base while continuing to run a business in London. Another expects to retire in Portugal in six years and may need the invested capital for a home. Both are considering residence through investment. Their priorities call for different fund decisions.

The programme allows eligible non-EU investors to apply for Portuguese residence through qualifying non-real-estate funds. Its minimum stay requirements, seven days in year one and fourteen in subsequent two-year periods, can accommodate families with substantial commitments elsewhere.

When comparing Portugal Golden Visa funds, eligibility is only the starting point. Examine what the fund owns, how it can lose money, what it costs and how investors get paid. A shared €500,000 threshold does not make different strategies interchangeable.

For the second family, an expected repayment in year six may look convenient. But if the fund's documents allow extensions or restrict redemption, a home purchase could depend on money that remains invested. The fund's exit terms also need to fit the obligations attached to the family's residence status.

Permanent residence may be requested after at least five years holding temporary residence, while naturalization generally requires ten years of qualifying legal residence for U.S. and UK nationals, alongside other conditions. Both require separate applications and approval; neither sets a fund's repayment date.

Unlike many other jurisdictions, you don't need to live permanently in Portugal to qualify for a Portuguese passport, offering unmatched flexibility in the market.

At MFG Consultants, we have advised international families from Portugal since 2012. MFG Consultants is a member of the Investment Migration Council (IMC) and the Portugal–United States Chamber of Commerce. I lead the investment analysis, while Melissa Gonçalves, our Chief Legal Officer, coordinates the legal and residency requirements. Our team is fully bilingual in English and Portuguese. We bring those perspectives together before a family commits capital.

Our review considers the fund's strategy, fees and access to capital alongside the investor's existing assets and intended use of Portuguese residence. We compare options within a working universe of more than 90 eligible GV funds; availability and suitability still need to be assessed for each investor. We explain client fees and any fund-manager remuneration before commitment.

Start by deciding who would use the residence, how much capital can remain invested and when the family might need it elsewhere. The Golden Visa Profiler helps organise those circumstances before a personal discussion.

For the family planning retirement, the test is whether the home purchase would still be feasible if a repayment arrived late. That is worth settling before choosing the fund.
