Mercadona continues to strengthen its presence in the Portuguese market with the opening of a new supermarket in Pedrouços, Maia, located on Estrada da Circunvalação, Grande Consumo reports.
The new supermarket represents an investment of more than €11 million in construction and forms part of the food retailer’s expansion strategy in Portugal.
With this opening, Mercadona now operates 28 supermarkets in the Porto district. The new store has created 64 jobs, all with permanent contracts from the first day of employment.
To mark the opening, the Mayor of Maia, António Silva Tiago, and the President of the Parish Council of Pedrouços, Hugo Salgueiro, visited the supermarket. António Silva Tiago highlighted the importance of the investment for the local economy, particularly in terms of job creation and employment stability.
Joana Ribeiro, Director of External Relations for Mercadona in the Porto district, said the opening represents another step in the chain’s expansion in the region.
“This journey has been possible thanks to the trust of our ‘Bosses’ (customers) and reinforces our commitment to continue creating value, jobs, and investment in the regions where we are present, offering a quality shopping experience that is increasingly aligned with the needs of those who choose us daily,” Ribeiro stated.
New facilities and services
The new store has 1,900 square metres of sales space and features Mercadona’s usual departments, including a butcher, fishmonger, delicatessen, bakery and pastry section, fruit and vegetables, perfumery, household and pet care products, and a wine section.
The supermarket also features a Ready-to-Eat section, offering a variety of prepared meals through a self-service system. Customers can take their meals home or enjoy them in a designated dining area within the store.
The supermarket has 152 parking spaces, including two electric vehicle charging spaces, and a parking area for bicycles and scooters.
Solar energy and food waste reduction
The new store incorporates 408 photovoltaic solar panels installed on the roof, which generate electricity for the supermarket’s own use. According to Mercadona, this type of installation allows for a reduction of approximately 20% in annual electricity consumption from the grid.
The company also continues its efforts to prevent food waste through a partnership with the Parish Centre of Our Lady of the Nativity of Pedrouços. Under the agreement, Mercadona donates food products daily that are no longer suitable for sale but remain safe for consumption.
With the opening of its new store in Pedrouços, Mercadona continues to expand its network in the Porto district, strengthening its presence in the municipality of Maia and its investment in new retail infrastructure across Portugal.
Mercadona also opened its first supermarket in the Algarve last month, located at Nova Vila Retail Park in Portimão, Grande Consumo reports.
With the new supermarket in Maia, the Spanish chain now operates 78 stores in Portugal.
