According to an ordinance published in the Official Gazette (DR), CP is authorised to "assume multi-year costs related to the contract for the "Rental of diesel railcars series 592 for the provision of services on non-electrified lines", up to the total amount of €4,960,720.30".
The text states that "due to delays in the execution of works to electrify the railway infrastructure and due to the lack of alternative rolling stock, there is still a need to extend the lease in question for a period of 24 months".
At issue is "the provision of the public rail transport service on the non-electrified Douro and Oeste lines and the international Porto-Vigo service".
The Porto-Vigo service is carried out on the Minho Line, which is already fully electrified, but as the electrical voltage is different in Portugal and Spain, and no dual-voltage trains have been rented, it must be operated with diesel equipment.
The locomotives have been leased to the Spanish company Renfe, and the contract extension covers costs that will run until 2028, with 2.4 million in 2026, 2.1 million in 2027 and 355 thousand euros in 2028.
The order is dated May 27 and was signed by the Deputy Secretary of State for Budget, José Maria Brandão de Brito, and the Secretary of State for Mobility, Cristina Pinto Dias.
