According to the mayor, the volume of water could reach 3,000 cubic meters per second at the dam-bridge, potentially causing flooding in Coimbra.
In a press conference, the mayor revealed that 14,500 people could be affected by the floods, which could cause disruption, especially in the city centre.
On its official website, the Coimbra City Hall states that the right and left banks of the river in the downtown area are among the most vulnerable areas, as well as “the Santa Clara square, the Parque Verde and Rebolim Beach, as well as the riverside area of Torres do Mondego, Ceira, Conraria and Vendas de Ceira.”
The areas around Coimbra-B train station and Casa do Sal may also be affected by the increased flow of the Mondego River. Ana Abrunhosa also asked residents and shopkeepers to protect their animals and prepare for a possible absence from home for a few days.”
All schools in the municipality will be closed, and Ana Abrunhosa appeals to companies that can to allow their employees to work remotely.
Ana Abrunhosa also asks for calm and that the orders of the authorities be obeyed whenever they are given, because “the only thing we don't control is the rain. But we control our behaviour.”
