“We are waiting to finalise details, but the idea is to reforest areas that burned in the 2025 fires,” the mayor of Lousã, Victor Carvalho, told the Lusa news agency.

According to him, although the project's implementation timeline has not yet been established, discussions are ongoing, and there is "a commitment and a clear willingness" from Ikea to invest in the reforestation of the Serra da Lousã.

“We are here with partners, with local common land communities, and it could be a lease proposal, but it's not yet finalised,” stated Victor Carvalho, mentioning that the Vilarinho common land community should be one of the entities supported, after more than a thousand hectares burned in that area of the municipality.

According to Victor Carvalho, the municipality has identified areas for reforestation, but the entire investment will come from Ikea, exceeding one million euros, as part of an environmental responsibility project by the Swedish multinational furniture manufacturer.

The reforestation will be done with maritime pine and "some native species" and is expected to primarily occur on common land areas in the Serra da Lousã.

"It's a way for us to help the communities and for them to have some additional income. I channelled all this effort towards the communities in the common lands," said Victor Carvalho.
