In a statement, the institution notes that the new designation stems from the Legal Regime of Higher Education Institutions (RJIES) and recognises the path taken by the academic community, the institution’s scientific evolution, the strength of its educational project, and the employability of its graduates.

According to IPSantarém, the change takes effect at the start of the 2026/2027 academic year; students will begin receiving polytechnic university degrees, while the educational offerings, academic degrees, diplomas, and existing employment contracts remain unchanged.

The institution believes this new status marks a phase of growth and institutional consolidation, creating conditions to expand educational programs, strengthen research, attract more students and faculty, and deepen national and international partnerships.

Quoted in the statement, João Moutão, President of the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém and future Rector of the Polytechnic University of Santarém, states that the change represents “recognition of a journey spanning generations” and reinforces the institution’s mission to train qualified professionals, produce impactful science, and contribute to regional development.

Santarém Mayor João Teixeira Leite also views the new designation as “one of the most significant moments in the recent history” of the municipality, arguing that the university will play a crucial role in retaining young people, attracting talent and investment, and enhancing the region’s qualifications.

This transformation is part of the higher education reform stemming from Law No. 16/2023 of 10 April, which amended the Basic Law of the Educational System and the RJIES, allowing institutionally accredited polytechnic institutes to adopt the designation of “polytechnic university.”

The new designation does not alter the nature of the education provided, nor does it align these institutions with the classical university model; the focus remains on practical and professionally oriented training, applied research, innovation, and ties to the economic and social fabric.

With roots in agricultural education that began in Santarém in the late 19th century, the institution boasts a history spanning over 137 years.

It currently comprises five higher education schools located in Santarém and Rio Maior, offering Higher Technical Professional Courses (CTeSP), bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, postgraduate programs, and joint doctoral programs in the fields of agriculture, education, health, management, technology, and sports.
