Researchers found that offshore energy structures can develop into reef-like habitats that attract marine life and increase biodiversity over time. The findings draw on evidence collected across 18 countries over a 42-year period.

The review suggests that oil rigs and wind turbines may provide environmental benefits after their operational life, including supporting fish stocks, marine tourism and nutrient cycling. Researchers said the findings could help inform future decommissioning policies and encourage governments to consider the ecological value of offshore structures before deciding whether they should be removed.
