The treaty provides a legal framework to protect international waters beyond national borders. Blue Marine Foundation’s Dr Judith Brown described the UK’s ratification as a “major step forward for ocean protection” and said it creates a once-in-a-generation opportunity to safeguard marine biodiversity.

Previously criticised for delaying ratification, the UK’s decision has been welcomed as a significant step towards strengthening global ocean protection efforts. The high seas treaty entered into force in January after more than 60 countries ratified it. It aims to improve protection of international waters, where only 1 percent is currently protected.
