We come here every summer, and it's one of the events we always look forward to. Even though there are so many festivals across the Algarve in August, Feira Medieval in Silves has become one of the region's biggest summer events.
This event attracts visitors not only from Portugal but also from many other countries.
As soon as you walk through the gates, it feels as though you've stepped back in time. The streets inside the town are lined with market stalls selling handmade crafts, leather goods, pottery, jewellery and other traditional products. We couldn't resist taking home a few souvenirs before continuing to explore.
One of my favourite parts of the fair is seeing so many people dressed in medieval costumes. Some are performers, while others simply enjoy becoming part of the atmosphere for the evening. Every year the organisers also invite members of the public to take part, and after seeing everyone this year, I'm already thinking we might join them next summer.
Throughout the evening there was always something happening. We watched musicians performing in the streets, came across traditional games and demonstrations, and every corner seemed to have another surprise. Around the castle and the narrow streets below it, there were entertainers, dancers and performers bringing the medieval atmosphere to life.

Of course, no visit would be complete without stopping for food. We enjoyed some traditional Portuguese festival dishes, shared a jug of sangria and finished the evening with one of the many sweet treats on offer while listening to live music.
The fair first began in 2001 and has grown into one of the Algarve's best-known cultural events. Each August, Silves celebrates its Moorish past by transforming the historic centre into a medieval town filled with markets, music, performances, workshops and historical re-enactments.
