Tourists from Luxembourg spend the most per night in Europe, with Portugal ranking below the European average.

Tourist spending reflects the evolution of the European tourism industry and how budgets are distributed among different countries, while travel habits change from year to year.

The study in question, conducted by Radical Storage, a global luggage storage platform, considered data on tourist spending in European Union (EU) countries to understand spending in the bloc. The objective also includes understanding which markets generate the most revenue, as well as how much travellers spend per trip.

Luxembourgers are the highest spenders on tourism in the EU, with an average of €191 per night and €1300 per trip. These figures are higher than the European average of €104 per night and €518 per trip.

On the opposite side, the inhabitants of Greece spend the least money on tourism, with an expenditure of €49 per night and €473 per trip.

Case of Portugal

Portugal is near the bottom of the Radical Storage ranking, with an average expenditure of €69, but with an expenditure of €284 per trip, followed by Latvia (€266), Hungary (€282) and the Czech Republic (€243).

Total tourism expenditure in the European Union

EU tourism expenditure reached approximately €617.9 billion in 2024, with €257.2 billion corresponding to domestic travel and €360.7 billion to international travel.

Germany accounts for the largest share of EU tourism expenditure, at €202.1 billion, almost double that of any other country.

The platform also states that Portugal has a total tourism expenditure of just over €5.5 billion, with domestic travel accounting for almost €3 billion and international travel exceeding €2.5 billion.
