Portugal’s tourism sector generated 36.2 billion euros in 2025, representing around 11.8 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to the Tourism Satellite Account published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Compared with 2024, tourism’s total contribution to GDP increased by 5.3 percent, while its contribution to Gross Value Added (GVA) rose by 5.5 percent, reinforcing the sector’s position as one of Portugal’s main economic pillars.

Despite continued expansion, INE data show tourism’s contribution to Portugal’s overall economic growth has steadily declined in recent years, Essential Business reports.

Economic contribution

In 2022, tourism accounted for 3.6 percentage points of the country’s 7.0 percent GDP growth as the sector rebounded strongly after the pandemic. By 2023, its contribution had fallen to 1.2 percentage points, out of overall GDP growth of 3.1 percent.

The trend continued in 2024 and 2025. Tourism contributed 0.4 percentage points to GDP growth of 2.2 percent in 2024 and 0.3 percentage points to GDP growth of 1.9 percent in 2025.

While the sector continues to grow and generate higher revenues, its role in driving Portugal’s overall real economic growth has become more modest.
