An Art Community at Every Stage

What does it mean to support an art community?

The most visible answer might be exhibitions, prizes and opportunities for professional artists. But a thriving creative community is built from many different layers, from children discovering the freedom to create, to young artists seeing their work exhibited, to established practitioners reaching new audiences.

Across Portugal, the Sovereign Art Foundation’s programmes increasingly connect these different parts of the creative community. This month, the launch of a new children’s drawing campaign sits alongside the continuing Students Prize and a collaboration with Lisbon’s Galeria NAVE. Meanwhile, 30 professional artists have already been selected for the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize, with the full shortlist due to be announced in early October.

These initiatives serve different purposes, but share a common belief in the value of creativity and in creating meaningful opportunities for people to experience, make and engage with art.

Creating opportunities through art

The latest addition is Galeria de Sonhadores – “Um Sonhador Nunca é Pequeno”, a new campaign inviting children to draw, imagine and share their ideas.

At its heart is something deliberately simple: giving children a reason to create and a platform on which that creativity can be celebrated.

For the Sovereign Art Foundation, its work with children centres on its expressive arts therapy programmes, which use creativity to support children and young people facing difficult circumstances. Alongside this core work, the Foundation runs a growing programme of free artist-led community workshops across Portugal, bringing professional artists together with children and families and creating opportunities to experiment, explore and make art together.

The objective is not to identify the professional artists of the future. A child does not need to demonstrate artistic talent for creativity to have value. Drawing, making and imagining offer ways to explore ideas, build confidence and experience the pleasure of creating something that did not exist before.

What matters is having the opportunity to begin.

Taking young artists seriously

For some young people, that creative interest develops further.

The Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize Portugal gives secondary-school students the opportunity to have their work considered beyond the classroom. Selected artworks are professionally exhibited, presented to the public and made available for sale, with proceeds shared between the young artist and the Foundation’s expressive arts programmes.

The experience gives young artists the opportunity to see their work presented to a wider audience and to discover that others are interested in what they have made and what they have to say.

Creating new routes for professional artists

At professional level, supporting an art community takes another form.

Earlier this year, the Sovereign Art Foundation collaborated with Galeria NAVE on O Banquete, creating an additional route into the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize.

One artist from the exhibition was selected to join this year’s 30 finalists, with their identity to be revealed alongside the full shortlist in early October.

The collaboration demonstrates the value of arts organisations working together. Partnerships can connect existing platforms, introduce artists to different audiences and create additional opportunities within the professional arts community.

It is one example of how collaboration can strengthen the wider network surrounding artists and their work.

A connected creative community

These programmes serve very different purposes, but they are connected by a shared commitment to creating meaningful opportunities through art.

Children and young people can experience creativity through expressive arts therapy and free community workshops. The Students Prize provides a platform for young artists to have their work exhibited and seen by wider audiences. Collaborations with galleries and cultural organisations create new connections and opportunities within the professional arts community, while the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize provides an international platform for some of the most exciting contemporary artists working in Portugal.

These connections also extend beyond individual programmes. Artists involved with the Foundation frequently contribute to workshops, talks and collaborations, sharing their practices with children, families and new audiences. Galleries, cultural organisations, schools, therapists, artists and supporters each bring different expertise and resources to the Foundation’s work.

Funds raised through the professional art programme, meanwhile, help support the Foundation’s charitable work, including Make It Better Portugal and its expressive arts therapy programmes for children and young people.

In this way, the different strands of SAF’s work reinforce one another: supporting artists, widening access to creativity and using art to create positive social impact.

The next 30

The next major moment for the Sovereign Art Foundation in Portugal will come in early October, with the announcement of the 30 finalists for the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize.

Judging is now complete, following hundreds of nominations and submissions from Portuguese artists and artists of other nationalities resident in Portugal. The final selection brings together a broad range of practices, materials and ideas, representing some of the most exciting contemporary talent working in Portugal today.

The announcement will begin the countdown to the finalist exhibition at Lisbon’s Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes, running from 24 November to 12 December 2026, where all 30 works will be presented together.

For the artists, the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize provides visibility and opportunities to connect with audiences, collectors, curators and fellow practitioners. For the Foundation, the Prize forms part of a much wider community built around the belief that art can have value at many different levels, from professional practice to education, participation and therapeutic support.

From expressive arts therapy and free community workshops to the Students Prize, gallery collaborations and the Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize, each programme has a distinct purpose. Together, they reflect a broader commitment to supporting creativity across Portugal and creating opportunities for people to experience, make and engage with art.

As the 2026 Professional Prize finalists prepare to be announced, that community continues to grow.
