An artwork can be encountered in many ways: on a screen, in a catalogue, in a gallery. But there is something different about sitting across the table from the person who made it.

This November, the Sovereign Art Foundation is taking that idea beyond the exhibition space with First Editions à Mesa, a series of intimate dinners bringing guests together with selected finalists from the 2026 Sovereign Portuguese Art Prize.

Each evening is built around a distinct curatorial theme and a selection of artworks that help shape the atmosphere of the night.

The intention is simple: to create space for conversation, connection and a different kind of encounter with contemporary art.

Three evenings, three different worlds

Each dinner begins with a selection of artworks and the ideas that connect them. Those ideas then shape the entire evening, from the setting and the food to the dress code, music and conversation.

The aim is not simply to place art beside dinner, but to create an experience in which every element belongs to the same world.

Guests will have time to spend with the works, hear directly from the artists, share their own perspectives and experience how the mood of an artwork can extend beyond the gallery wall and into the room around it.

You do not need to be a collector or know the language of contemporary art. Come with curiosity, bring a friend and see where the conversation takes you.

With different artists, settings and themes, each dinner offers its own experience. Join one, or discover how the conversation changes across the series.

Forbidden Feast

The first evening, Forbidden Feast, takes place at DAM Marvila on 6 November.

The selected works explore ideas around the body, desire, intimacy, absence, consumption and transformation. Those themes will carry through the evening, with the food, styling and atmosphere responding to the artworks on display.

Guests are invited to enter the world of the dinner through a rich jewel-toned dress code, creating an evening that feels theatrical, generous and slightly unexpected.

The point is not to explain the art before the evening has begun, but to allow the works, the artists and the shared experience of the table to open up the conversation.

Beautiful Resistance

On 16 November, Beautiful Resistance moves to Cícero in Chiado.

This dinner has a different rhythm, shaped by works that consider resilience, identity, memory, care and the idea of finding strength in moments of difficulty.

The evening will be more reflective in tone, with its own palette, food and atmosphere designed around the ideas at the centre of the selected works.

Here, the emphasis is on quiet strength rather than spectacle, and on the way art can create space for conversations that feel personal, thoughtful and unexpected.

Surface Tension

The final dinner, Surface Tension, takes place on 20 November in central Lisbon.

Its starting point is the idea that surfaces can reveal, conceal, distort or hold tension. The selected works explore material, perception and what may sit beneath the visible image.

That concept will extend through the evening in a darker, more minimal visual world, with a black-and-silver dress code and a setting designed to feel sharp, contemporary and immersive.

Together, the three dinners show how differently an artwork can shape an experience when it is allowed to move beyond the frame.

Curation with purpose

For the Sovereign Art Foundation, First Editions à Mesa has been created as a new way to bring supporters closer to the artists, the work and the ideas behind this year’s Prize.

Each evening is carefully considered from the artwork outwards. The selected works establish the theme, and that theme then influences the setting, food, dress code, music and conversation.

The result is intended to feel less like attending an event and more like stepping into a complete world shaped by the art itself.

At the same time, the purpose remains clear. Through the generosity of venue and event partners, costs are kept as low as possible so that ticket proceeds can support the Foundation’s therapist-led expressive arts programmes for children and young people in Portugal.

The evenings therefore bring together several parts of SAF’s work: supporting artists, creating memorable experiences around contemporary art and raising funds for programmes that use creativity to support children.

Around the same table

The most memorable encounters with art are not always the most formal ones.

Sometimes they happen through a conversation, a shared meal, a surprising detail or a story told directly by the person who made the work.

First Editions à Mesa is designed around that possibility.

Three evenings. Three distinct worlds. One table at a time.
