This procurement covers portable dual-channel software-defined radios (SDR), equipped with wideband mobile ad hoc networking (MANET) and AES 256 Type 3 encryption, intended for the Marine Corps Command (CCF), including its Special Operations Unit.

As reported by Diário da República, the purchase is considered a critical capability for maintaining the readiness, effectiveness and security of personnel operating in demanding missions.

Authorised expenditure

The document, dated 31 August and published this week, authorises expenditure of up to €1.6 million, excluding VAT, to supply the tactical communication equipment.

According to the Navy, the new radios will improve command and control while making communications more secure, resilient and interoperable, supporting greater digital integration between military units.

Furthermore, the equipment will contribute towards several NATO Capability Targets assigned to the Navy, particularly those relating to secure and resilient communications and the integration of digital systems.

The radios are expected to support missions carried out both nationally and as part of Portugal’s international commitments, including those undertaken within the Atlantic alliance.
