The captain confirmed his departure in a statement on Instagram on Wednesday, 30 September. He said he made the decision after Jorge Jesus's press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

Ronaldo did not give a detailed explanation, saying he would share his reasons with the Portuguese public in due course. He also wished Portugal and all his teammates good luck.

His departure follows several days of tension over his role in the team. As reported by RTP, Ronaldo remained on the bench throughout Portugal's 2–1 win against Norway on Sunday and left the pitch without joining his teammates in thanking the supporters.

He later missed training with the squad in Malmö, returning to the hotel to work in the gym. Proença brought forward his arrival at the camp as the situation developed.

At Wednesday's press conference, Jesus denied that Ronaldo had refused to train and played down suggestions of a dispute. He said the captain would take part in that day's session, but Ronaldo left the stadium before training began.

Jesus also indicated that Gonçalo Ramos was likely to start against Denmark, with Ronaldo's involvement depending on how the match unfolded.

The FPF subsequently confirmed Ronaldo's departure. In its own statement, the federation said preparations for the matches against Denmark and Norway would continue as planned with the remaining 24 players.

Ronaldo's announcement concerns his departure from this training camp. He has not announced his retirement from international football.
