The investment will cover the municipalities of Loulé, Faro, Portimão, Lagos and Albufeira and was announced by Environment and Energy Minister Maria da Graça Carvalho during a visit to the Algarve.

Sul Informação reports that the planned interventions include replenishing sand on beaches, stabilising cliffs and restructuring the breakwaters in Quarteira, where coastal erosion has been a long-running concern.

Projects across the Algarve

Several individual projects have already been identified across the region.

In Quarteira, around €4.5 million is expected to be invested in work on the breakwaters. The intervention is intended to help reduce erosion along the eastern section of the coastline.

Lagos is also included in the programme, with €1.5 million earmarked for interventions at Praia do Pinhão, Dona Ana and Camilo.

Around €5 million is planned for the Ria Formosa area, including works on Ilha do Farol worth approximately €984,000.

Further west, around €3 million is expected to be spent on the second phase of works at Praia do Vau in Portimão.

The projects form part of wider efforts to protect the Algarve coastline from erosion and improve its resilience, particularly in areas where beaches and cliffs are increasingly vulnerable.

Further investments planned

However, the work will not happen immediately. Maria da Graça Carvalho explained that projects of this scale can take between two and three years to move forward, with financing agreements, technical projects and public tenders all needing to be completed before work can begin.

The coastal investment was announced alongside other major environmental projects for the Algarve, including measures to improve water management and reduce losses from the region’s public water supply networks.

A total of €120 million in water-related investment is planned in the Algarve until 2028, with the aim of reducing water losses in public networks from around 20 percent to 15 percent.
