Between Praia dos Três Castelos and Praia dos Careanos, Praia do Amado is a beautiful stretch of sand where the rock formations always make me stop for another look.

You can reach it by taking the staircase down from the cliff top or walking along the sand from neighbouring Praia dos Três Castelos. That’s what I normally do. I settle at Três Castelos, which has a restaurant and lifeguards during the bathing season, then take a walk west, in the direction of Alvor.

From the sand, it isn’t immediately obvious where one beach ends and the next begins. The sign for Praia do Amado is above the beach, beside the cliff-top route, where you can enjoy another perspective of the coastline.

Along the way, one formation particularly catches my attention: a cave with an opening in its roof, reminding me of the more famous Benagil cave in Lagoa. Further along, there is a rock that looks like an elephant, while towards Careanos you can admire a natural arch by the water.

These little discoveries are what I enjoy most about this walk. Even when I’ve visited before, I always stop to admire the shapes and take more photographs.

When you are exploring towards Careanos, select the time of low tide since this will give you more space to walk between the beaches.

Best for: Beach walks, photography and admiring rock formations
