The Zero Driving Tax campaign, run by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), Public Security Police (PSP), and National Republican Guard (GNR), has planned actions in Guarda (August 19 and 20), Elvas (August 21), Portalegre (August 22), and Tomar (August 25).
In Portugal, "in 2023, one in four drivers who died in traffic accidents had a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 0.5 g/l, and three in four of these drivers had a level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l," the authorities said in a joint statement.
"Of all autopsied traffic accident victims, 23% had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, of which 73% exceeded the level considered a crime," the statement reads.
Authorities warn that "driving under the influence of alcohol causes several disorders, particularly at the cognitive and information processing levels, as well as changes in the ability to react to unexpected situations and motor incoordination."
This will be the eighth of 11 campaigns planned for this year, within the scope of the 2025 National Program for Alcohol and Alcohol Abuse (PNF), which includes monthly initiatives.
