Giraffe Diversity

A new report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature has concluded that there are four different species of giraffes found across Africa, as opposed to the nine subspecies that were thought to exist previously.

This decision is built upon a 2016 study by the Namibia-based Giraffe Conservation Foundation who looked into the animal’s DNA.

The new species have been named the Maasai, northern, reticulated, and southern giraffes.
