This is the Moreton Bay Fig, an Australian giant that has called Ponta Delgada home since 1870. It was planted by the visionary botanist José do Canto, a man who treated the Azores as a living laboratory for the world’s most exotic species.

The tree is a masterpiece of natural architecture. Its massive roots crawl across the ground like waves, holding a huge canopy. For over 150 years, it has witnessed the city's slow transition, surviving storms and the shifting tides of history. It serves as a living bridge between the distant Australian wilderness and the heart of Atlantic life—a silent, rooted reminder that nature builds the most enduring landmarks.
