The new high-voltage connection works like an “electric motorway” between the two countries, allowing electricity to move more easily across the border. This is especially important at a time when Portugal and Spain are producing more energy from solar, wind and water.

When there is extra renewable energy being produced on one side of the border, it can now be sent more efficiently to where it is needed, instead of being wasted. The same can happen in the opposite direction, helping both countries balance their electricity supply.

The project is also expected to make the power network stronger and more reliable, which is becoming increasingly important as Europe moves towards cleaner energy.

The new link was developed by Portugal’s REN and Spain’s Red Eléctrica and is seen as an important step for the Iberian Peninsula’s energy future.

As reported by SAPO, the inauguration ceremony takes place on 2 July 2026 in Arbo, Spain, with representatives from the Portuguese and Spanish governments, the European Commission, Galicia, and the companies behind the project in attendance.

The launch of the new interconnection marks another milestone in building a smarter, more connected and sustainable energy network for the Iberian Peninsula, helping Portugal and Spain make the most of their renewable energy resources while supporting Europe's long-term climate goals.
