The appointment was presented to the newspaper’s Editorial Board on Tuesday afternoon, following the departure of André Macedo at the end of July, as reported by +M.

Previous connections

Marcelino previously served as content director of the Portuguese Football Federation and is also known for his work as a commentator for 11 and CNN Portugal.

He will now take over the leadership of Jornal Económico, reversing a move that dates back to 2014, when Macedo succeeded Marcelino as director of Diário de Notícias.

José Carlos Lourenço, CEO of Media9, highlighted Marcelino’s previous connection to Jornal Económico, having worked with the publication as an external contributor between 2018 and 2022 before becoming its main editor.

Editorial structure

This new management structure will retain Ricardo Santos Ferreira and Lígia Simões, who will both take on deputy director roles, while José Carlos Lourenço will serve as executive editor.

The leadership change follows Macedo’s departure after almost two years at the helm of Jornal Económico, which +M first reported at the end of July.

In the interim period, Ricardo Santos Ferreira took over as director, with his temporary mandate expected to run until the end of August.

Therefore, Marcelino will formally lead the publication as it enters a new phase, supported by members of the previous management team in the new editorial structure.
