In a statement, the GNR reported that the group’s leader, a fugitive for over a year, was arrested on 13 August in Portalegre; after questioning by authorities, he was remanded in custody.
The GNR added that this arrest follows a major operation carried out in conjunction with Spain’s Civil Guard (Guardia Civil). The investigation was led by the Special Operations Intervention Group (GIOE) of the GNR’s Intervention Unit.
As a result of the investigation, the criminal organisation’s logistical structure had already been dismantled in July, with the arrest of 49 individuals and the seizure of over seven tons of drugs, 11 weapons, and 18 high-speed vessels.
Thirty-two people were arrested in Portuguese territory and 17 in Spain.
The suspect, who has now been detained, was considered a key figure in coordinating and organising criminal networks linked to international drug trafficking with operations in Portugal.
Authorities also seized seven tons of hashish and 650 kilograms of cocaine, along with 18 high-speed vessels, valued at approximately eight million euros, and 40 high-power engines worth an estimated 2.5 million euros.
Additionally, authorities seized 780,000 euros in cash, 11 firearms, and 24 vehicles.
