According to the statement, the highest number of incidents, 28, resulting in 46 rescues, was recorded within the area of responsibility of the Lisbon Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC).

Meanwhile, 13 search and rescue operations were coordinated within the Ponta Delgada MRCC’s area of responsibility, saving nine people. In contrast, the Funchal Maritime Rescue Coordination Sub-Centre coordinated two operations that saved five people.

The Portuguese Navy highlights the importance of the support provided by merchant ships and fishing vessels during search and rescue operations, noting that they “divert from their commercial routes and interrupt their professional activities to provide necessary assistance, always under the coordination of the national centres—MRCC Lisbon and MRCC Ponta Delgada.”

The institution also notes that the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres have been “recognised nationally and internationally with various awards” and maintain “their commitment to safeguarding human life at sea, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
