The increases are approximately 2.7% for the average monthly electricity bill and 6.4% for regulated natural gas prices. They come into effect on the same day, although they result from separate tariff decisions by the energy regulator, ERSE.
How much more will electricity cost?
ERSE's electricity announcement gives two examples of what the change means at home.
A couple without children, with contracted power of 3.45 kVA and annual consumption of 1,900 kWh, will pay an additional 95 cents a month. Their average bill rises to €37.77.
For a couple with two children, contracted power of 6.9 kVA and annual consumption of 5,000 kWh, the monthly increase is €2.70, bringing the average bill to €97.73.
The change covers around 779,000 customers who were on the regulated electricity market in June 2026.
ERSE links the adjustment to higher wholesale energy costs than those anticipated when the original tariffs were set. The regulator reviews these costs quarterly and adjusts the energy tariff when the difference reaches the threshold set out in its rules.
Natural gas also increases
The new gas tariffs apply to the gas year running from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027.
In its gas tariff announcement, ERSE puts the average increase at 6.4% for regulated customers with annual consumption of up to 10,000 cubic metres, a group made up mainly of households.
Its examples show a monthly increase of 91 cents for a couple without children, taking their average bill to €17.38. A couple with two children will pay another €1.62, bringing the monthly average to €32.53. These estimates include taxes and charges.
Will everyone pay more?
The percentages do not automatically apply to every energy contract in Portugal.
As Executive Digest explains in its report on the changes, customers on the free market pay the prices agreed with their supplier. Companies are not required to apply the same increases as the regulated tariffs.
For electricity customers, ERSE recommends watching for changes to their supplier's prices and checking its energy price simulator to compare available offers. The amount on an individual bill will still depend on consumption, contracted power and the tariff chosen.
