Small, yet full of interesting places, it has a lovely atmosphere and plenty of little corners that make you want to keep exploring.

Portugal’s oldest chartered town, Ponte de Lima received its charter from Dona Teresa on 4 March 1125, before the foundation of the Portuguese kingdom. Its history, however, goes back much further, with the Romans leaving their mark on the area.

The bridge is the town’s best-known landmark. Its larger medieval section crosses the Lima River and connects with the remains of an older Roman bridge, bringing two periods of history together.

But there is much more to enjoy beyond the bridge. Walking through the historic centre, you come across old buildings, small squares and the Igreja Matriz, the town’s main church, with its Gothic features. Two towers also survive from the medieval walls that once protected the town.

What I like is the combination of history and the beautiful riverside setting. You can explore the centre, stop for a coffee and wander back towards the water. It is a place I always enjoy, including when visiting northern Portugal.
