According to the municipality of Montemor-o-Velho, this reinstatement is the result of an intervention by the Mayor, José Veríssimo, with Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) and Comboios de Portugal (CP).
“Its objective was to ensure an essential rail mobility alternative for the population on the left bank of the Mondego River, which faces significant constraints on road traffic due to rising water levels in the Mondego Valley,” they explained.
The Municipality of Montemor-o-Velho also highlighted the commitment of IP and CP in addressing the request to find and implement solutions that minimise the constraints experienced by the population and contribute to the progressive restoration of normality.
The Northern Line is closed near Alfarelos train station, and the Western Line and the Alfarelos branch line, which usually carry suburban trains between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz, are interrupted due to several incidents caused by bad weather.
This situation has significantly worsened mobility in the region, at a time when there are also significant cuts and restrictions on the road network.
“The restoration of this rail link is essential to ensure the mobility of the population on the left bank of the Mondego River to Coimbra, guaranteeing access to work, health services and other essential services,” he emphasised.
