From Port to Poncha, and even Medronho. There are many different options for everyone to choose from. Let’s explore some of these drinks.
Port is perhaps the most famous drink from Portugal since the 1700s. Coming from the region of Douro, people used to add brandy to the wine during the fermentation period to stop it from finishing the process, and as a result, created what is now known as Port wine.
Poncha was used as medicine by sailors at sea to combat the cold and other sicknesses. It now became the most representative drink in Madeira. It is made from squeezed lemons and oranges, mixed with an equal amount of aguardente, a sugarcane spirit.
Medronho is made using the fruit that gives it its name. The tradition of Medronho is being revived, as it was a drink that many stopped producing due to the difficulty of harvesting medronhos. Nowadays, you can see it being produced in Alentejo. There is even a museum dedicated to Medronho in Alqueva.
With so many different drinks to choose from, it's hard to choose between them.
