This unconventional sandwich was created right here in the city, and it stands out for its layers of meat and thick cheese sauce, which is very different from the lighter Portuguese food. Nowadays, people order it in cafés and restaurants, often with fries on the side.

It was invented in the 1940s or 1950s, inspired by the French Croque-monsieur, but much bigger and spicier. Inside, you can find steak, ham, sausage, and linguiça, all covered in melted cheese and a secret tomato-beer sauce. Some places add an egg on top for extra richness, and nowadays you can even find vegetarian and vegan alternatives.

It’s a full meal on its own, ideal for sharing, as portions are big, so it fills you up fast.
