The newly certified route stretches for more than 180 kilometres through northern Portugal, crossing 15 municipalities between Sernancelhe and Valença. The designation aims to help preserve the route's cultural and natural heritage while ensuring adequate support services for pilgrims.

The Caminho de Torres follows a historic path used by travellers and pilgrims for centuries. According to the government, its long-standing significance has been supported by extensive academic research, historical records and archaeological evidence.

Along the route, pilgrims encounter numerous landmarks linked to the devotion to Saint James, including churches, monasteries, cathedrals and bridges that have welcomed travellers since medieval times. Among the most notable sites are the Cathedral of Lamego, the São Gonçalo Bridge in Amarante, the Monastery of Pombeiro, the historic centre of Guimarães, the Cathedral of Braga and the iconic medieval bridge of Ponte de Lima.

One of the route's distinguishing features is the diversity of landscapes and heritage sites it passes through. The trail crosses two UNESCO World Heritage sites — the Alto Douro Wine Region and the Historic Centre of Guimarães — and connects several locations of cultural and historical importance.

Beyond its architectural and religious heritage, the route also highlights Portugal's literary legacy. Sections of the trail pass through areas associated with some of the country's most celebrated writers, including Raul Brandão, Teixeira de Pascoaes, Miguel Torga, Camilo Castelo Branco and Aquilino Ribeiro, creating what promoters describe as a unique "literary route" alongside the traditional pilgrimage experience.

The certification is expected to boost the visibility of the Caminho de Torres among both domestic and international pilgrims, while contributing to tourism and economic activity across the communities it traverses.

The route joins a growing network of officially recognised Portuguese paths leading to Santiago de Compostela, one of Europe's most important pilgrimage destinations.
