The Government has confirmed the resumption of this rail service, which had been suspended for 11 years, after being asked about it by the Livre party and having it first reported by the newspaper Público.
As a result of the measure, CP (Comboios de Portugal) will be providing more frequent services on the section of the route between Castanheira do Ribatejo and Alcântara-Terra.
The restoration of the service had always been one of the demands made by a number of political groups and local organisations. In July 2025 the Lisbon City Council agreed to a proposal put forward by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) for the resumption and extension of service on the line at all times, and the Vizinhos de Lisboa (Neighbours of Lisbon) association had also made a formal complaint regarding the absence of a direct link to the city centre on weekends.
Train services on this section have been suspended on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays since CP reorganised its services in June 2015, a decision which at that time was deemed justified on the grounds of low passenger demand.
