For the second consecutive year, after a nine-year interval, the Repsol Guide celebrated national restaurants, and the distinctions of this year's edition were announced during a gala held at the Garcia de Resende Theatre in the Alentejo city.
Restaurants in the Algarve
The restaurants Vila Joya, in Albufeira, where Dieter Koschina leads the kitchen, and Vista, in Portimão, by João Oliveira, were distinguished with three Suns, bringing the total number of restaurants in Portugal with the highest distinction from the Repsol Guide to six.
These Algarve establishments join those awarded in the last edition: Belcanto (Lisbon), by José Avillez; Il Gallo D’Oro (Funchal), by Benoît Sinthon; Ocean (Porches), by chef Hans Neuner, and The Yeatman (Vila Nova de Gaia), by Ricardo Costa.
Other awards
Nine restaurants have now been awarded two Suns, mostly in the Lisbon and Porto areas, with Palatial being a newcomer, winning the first two Suns for Braga, and Desarma, securing another two Suns for Funchal.
The 30 restaurants that received a Repsol Guide Sun are spread across the country, with highlights including Foco (Leiria), O Calheta (São Miguel, Azores), G Pousada (Bragança), Malhadinha Nova (Beja) and Latitude and Bioma (both on Pico Island, Azores).
There are also 79 establishments with the “Repsol Guide Restaurants” seal, a category that replaced the previous Recommended category.
Sustainability awards
This year, four Sustainable Suns were also awarded, recognising environmental awareness in the restaurant industry: Vista in Lisbon, Mesa de Lemos in Viseu, Ciclo in Lisbon, and Pão & Pizza in Alandroal.
In total, across both editions, the Repsol Portugal Guide now features 298 restaurants, with 102 Suns.
Promoting gastronomy
The Repsol Portugal Guide aims to promote and recognise gastronomy and tourism in Portugal, and the classification system is carried out by local experts, focusing on "the culture, tradition, and gastronomic and tourist potential of the country."
The ceremony was held in Portugal between 1989 and 2016, when the organisation decided to take a break "for deep reflection in order to adapt to the tourist and gastronomic demands of new travellers and diners."
After nine years, the Repsol Guide returned to Portugal, with the 2025 edition held in Santarém, aiming to establish itself as "a meeting point for the Portuguese gastronomic community and to interact with it in order to grow".
