This Monday, 17 August, temperatures remain particularly high in the north and centre, with some inland areas experiencing the highest temperatures.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has weather warnings in place due to the heat in parts of mainland Portugal, while conditions in the south are looking rather different.

In the Algarve, showers and thunderstorms are possible this Monday, particularly in inland and mountainous areas. These could locally be accompanied by heavy rain, strong wind gusts and hail.

Despite the possibility of rain, temperatures will remain high. Across mainland Portugal, IPMA forecasts generally hot weather with mostly clear skies, although cloud cover is expected to increase temporarily, particularly over inland areas, bringing the possibility of showers and thunderstorms.

What about the rest of the week?

The weather is expected to become more settled after the unstable start to the week, while temperatures should begin to ease in some of the areas currently experiencing the most intense heat.

Tuesday will remain very hot in parts of northern and central Portugal, with IPMA's heat warnings continuing through much of the day.

From the middle of the week, the extreme temperatures are expected to become less widespread, although summer weather will continue across mainland Portugal.

There will also continue to be a noticeable difference between the coast and the interior, with inland areas generally experiencing higher daytime temperatures.

For the south, the risk of showers and thunderstorms is concentrated mainly around the beginning of the week.

Madeira and the Azores

Madeira is expected to escape the more extreme heat affecting parts of mainland Portugal, with generally milder summer temperatures across the archipelago.

The Azores will also see a different picture from the mainland. IPMA's outlook for the week beginning 17 August points to warmer-than-normal temperatures across the archipelago, with average weekly temperatures expected to be around 0.5°C to 1.5°C above normal.

At the same time, rainfall in the Azores is expected to be below normal across the archipelago this week. For Monday, IPMA forecasts generally light winds across the island groups, with good visibility in many areas.

The difference between the mainland and the islands highlights the varied weather Portugal can experience at the same time, particularly during the summer months.

The change comes in the second half of August, following another period of very high temperatures across Portugal.

People planning to spend time outdoors, particularly in areas affected by heat or thunderstorms, should keep an eye on the latest forecasts and weather warnings, as conditions can change quickly.
