The municipality specified that the PRR funded €3.6 million of the €4.1 million invested in the infrastructure.
The new building will serve approximately 10,000 patients from the parishes of Enxara do Bispo/Gradil/Vila Franca do Rosário and Azueira/Sobral da Abelheira.
The facility will serve the 7,221 people currently registered at the Enxara do Bispo and Azueira health centres—which will “close their doors and transfer their services to the new unit”—and address “population growth and the presence of unregistered citizens,” the Lisbon district municipality explained.
The Mafra Oeste Health Centre will operate as an extension of the Personalised Health Care Unit (UCSP) and the Andreas Family Health Unit (USF), both based at the Mafra Norte Health Centre.
It is staffed by four general and family medicine physicians, four nurses, and a nutritionist.
Construction began in April 2024, following a public tender launched in July 2023 for €3.3 million.
“This new, innovative building aims to meet current needs, fostering improvements in the primary health care provided to the population,” the City Council stated at the time.
The building was constructed on municipal land next to National Road 9-2 in Gradil, near the junction leading to Enxara do Bispo and close to the locality of Casas Novas.
In 2019, the municipality opened a health centre in the municipal seat to serve the surrounding parishes, and in 2017, it opened a facility to serve Malveira and Venda do Pinheiro.
For these investments, the municipality and the now-defunct Lisbon and Tagus Valley Regional Health Administration established collaboration agreements under the oversight of the Ministry of Health.
