The Portuguese cyclist spoke to the national press at Quinta da Amendoeira, where he took stock of the past season and outlined his goals for the new year.

"It was my best season ever, with important victories in races of the highest level. It will be difficult to surpass, but we will try," said the UAE Team Emirates rider.

The preparation for the new season is going smoothly. João Almeida revealed that he feels good physically and is without health problems, showing confidence for the start of the season, which will take place at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. "We are already aiming to win," he said.

One of the main decisions for 2026 involves prioritising the Giro d'Italia as a Grand Tour, instead of the Tour de France. The choice was made by the cyclist himself, with the support of the team. "It makes sense to change the calendar a little. The Giro is a good opportunity to fight for victory," he explained.

Regarding the possible presence of big names in the Italian race, João Almeida seemed calm. "It will be a very strong opponent, but it also motivates me. Nobody is unbeatable, and the Giro is a more unpredictable race," he stressed.

When questioned about his racing style, often described as more calculating, the Portuguese rider defended his approach. "Going for the shock isn't always the best option. Often it's a smart way to manage effort," he stated.

João Almeida also acknowledged the importance of the experience gained in the Grand Tours, which he considers crucial for fighting for better results. "Today I know better what awaits me over three weeks, both physically and mentally."

Winning a Grand Tour remains his main career goal. "It's a dream, and I'm going to do my best to make it happen," he stated.

The cyclist also expressed his appreciation for Rui Costa, highlighting the impact he had on national cycling, and showed confidence in the future of the new Portuguese generation. To the fans, he made a simple promise: "I'm going to do my best."
