Conservationists began reintroducing rehabilitated animals to the Jantho Pine Forest Nature Reserve 15 years ago after they recovered from captivity, conflict or orphanhood. Researchers say at least 10 babies have since been born in the reserve.

Young orangutans often require years of rehabilitation before they can survive independently, learning skills such as foraging, nest building and navigating the rainforest. Since 2011, conservationists from the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program have brought nearly 200 orangutans to Jantho. They say the births show rescued animals are not only surviving but establishing a self-sustaining wild population.
