Forno d’Oro, run by chef Tanka Sapkota, took 49th place in the 50 Top Pizza World 2026 ranking, moving up 12 positions from last year.
Forno d’Oro has improved its position in the ranking over the past three years, moving from 73rd place in 2024 to 61st last year and 49th in 2026. The Lisbon restaurant was also ranked ninth in Europe this year.
Located on Rua Artilharia 1 in Lisbon, Forno d’Oro specialises in Neapolitan-style pizza. Its dough is left to ferment slowly for 36 hours before being cooked at around 450°C in a wood-fired oven brought from Naples. At that temperature, a pizza takes less than a minute to cook.
The restaurant opened in 2014 and is owned by Nepalese-born chef Tanka Sapkota, who has built a name for himself in Lisbon’s Italian restaurant scene.
According to Portugal Global, Forno d’Oro’s distinctive oven was imported from Naples and assembled in Lisbon piece by piece. The oven is covered in gold leaf, a detail reflected in the restaurant’s name, which translates as “golden oven”.
This year’s world ranking is headed by Napoli on the Road in London, followed by Una Pizza Napoletana in New York and Confine in Milan.
Italy remains the country with the biggest presence on the list, with 31 pizzerias among the world’s top 100.
Forno d’Oro’s 49th position puts Lisbon alongside cities from across the world in the ranking, with the Portuguese restaurant appearing between a Mano in Makati, Philippines, in 48th place and Bottega in Beijing, China, in 50th.
