The trains are meant to reach 300 km/h, in a contract that can be worth up to €584 million, which is of major importance for Portugal’s railway. This tender covers 12 trainsets, with the possibility of acquiring eight more, for these high-speed services.

In addition to the train acquisition, the contract will include spare parts and full maintenance for two years. The first train is set to arrive in 2031; the rest of the trains are meant to arrive in Portugal every month until the third quarter of 2032. The trains should be compatible with the Portuguese and Spanish railway type, which is also a key factor for the tender.

Talgo proposal

Talgo can offer its Avril platform, which can reach 330 km/h and is available in fixed and variable gauge for European and Iberian networks. The Spanish company also reveals that its order backlog reached €6.3 billion, expecting to reach a net revenue of more than €700 million in 2026, after the value reached in 2025 (€618 million). Nevertheless, the company is also trying to sort out delivery delays and reliability issues that are linked to the supply of Avril trains to Renfe.

Alstom proposal

Alstom, the French company that presented a bid, has a more established position in Portugal. The group reported €19.17 billion in revenue, €27.6 billion in new orders, and a €104.4 billion backlog in 2025/26. Alstom's net profit has also doubled to over €324 million. The group is expanding in Portugal, after supplying 117 trains to CP in 2023. Furthermore, the company is also building a factory in Guifões to be completed in 2028.
