Beyond Breast Cancer

The Mamativa Association is launching Beyond Breast Cancer, an international patient education and support initiative created to support women living with or beyond breast cancer, with a particular focus on the international community living in the Algarve.

Beyond Breast Cancer aims to create a safe and inclusive space where women affected by breast cancer — as well as their caregivers — can access reliable health information, connect with healthcare professionals, share experiences and build supportive relationships throughout their cancer journey.

The initiative recognises a particular challenge faced by many international residents in the Algarve: language can become a significant barrier to accessing and understanding healthcare information. Beyond Breast Cancer is therefore being pioneer by using for the first time in Portugal a real-time translation solution, designed to enable participants to follow educational sessions in their own language and engage fully with the information being shared.

“A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming, particularly when you are living away from your home country, your family and your usual support network. Beyond Breast Cancer was created to make sure that women do not have to navigate this journey alone — or in a language they do not fully understand.”

The programme will bring together experienced healthcare professionals specialising in breast cancer care, including medical oncologists, surgeons, physiotherapists and psychologists, providing participants with access to multidisciplinary perspectives on diagnosis, treatment, recovery, quality of life and life after cancer.

First session: 2 October at Longevity Hotel, Alvor

The first Beyond Breast Cancer session will take place on 2 October 2026 at 4:00 PM at Longevity Hotel in Alvor.

The session will mark the beginning of a programme of educational and community-focused events that will take place across the Algarve, addressing topics that are particularly relevant to women living with and beyond breast cancer.

The programme will combine expert-led education, practical information, opportunities for questions and discussion, and shared experiences, reinforcing the project's central message: breast cancer is a life-changing diagnosis, but it does not have to define a person's life.

Beyond Breast Cancer is designed not only to improve access to information, but also to strengthen health literacy, connection and community, helping women feel more informed, confident and supported throughout their journey.

The initiative will continue with further sessions and activities across the Algarve, bringing together healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers and members of the international community.

Through Beyond Breast Cancer, Mamativa aims to extend this support to the diverse international population living in the Algarve and contribute to a more inclusive and accessible approach to cancer care.
