As an artist, I often ask myself where serious art lives in the Algarve. If Paris, London or

Berlin are out of reach for the weekend, where do you go to experience paintings that move you, conversations that inspire you and spaces that make you want to create?

Portimão gave me an unexpected answer.

My first stop was Meike’s Gallery, the beautiful exhibition space of Dutch artist Meike. Unfortunately, she was travelling during my visit, so we didn’t have the chance to meet. I hope to return for a proper conversation about her work and artistic journey.

Even without the artist, the gallery speaks eloquently.

I arrived just eight minutes before closing time, expecting only a quick visit. Instead, I was warmly welcomed and invited to take as much time as I needed. That simple act of generosity immediately set the tone.

The gallery feels like the studio every painter dreams of owning. Spacious white rooms display large figurative oil paintings, while elegant furniture, a working studio and a peaceful sunlit courtyard create an atmosphere where art comes before commerce. Prices are discreet. Nothing distracts from simply looking.

It is, quite simply, a dream gallery. Not every gallery I visited that day left the same impression. Some spaces felt more like decorative gift shops than places dedicated to serious painting. Those brief disappointments only made my next discovery even more memorable.

Just around the corner, I stepped into Galeria Canto & Serra.

At first glance, it looks like a traditional local gallery. Then the owner began talking.

Within minutes we were discussing Portuguese art, Russian painters, learning languages and my work writing for The Portugal News. He mentioned that he was preparing a September exhibition and that nothing was really ready to be shown. Then, without another word, he picked up a set of keys.

He unlocked a huge warehouse hidden behind the gallery.

Inside were paintings, sculpture, photography and works collected over many years. One exhibition celebrated musical icons painted by different artists. There were beautiful sculptures by a Portuguese artist who has since passed away, alongside paintings that had travelled to Portugal decades earlier.

One canvas immediately reminded me of the great Russian realist tradition, somewhere between the poetic landscapes of Savrasov and the rich storytelling atmosphere of Kustodiev. The owner smiled and explained that a Russian artist had brought it to him many years ago. Suddenly we were talking not only about paintings but about cultural memory itself.

The most memorable moment, however, came from his honesty.

Although Antonio paints and sculpts himself—and still creates mixed-media work—over time he came to see more meaning in supporting and championing other artists. Rather than focusing solely on his own practice, he chose to dedicate much of his life to helping other artists develop, create, and find an audience.

That humility impressed me more than any sales pitch ever could.

His gallery reflects exactly the same philosophy. Every piece feels carefully selected rather than commercially calculated. Whether you’re an experienced collector or buying your very first original artwork, there is something to discover. During our visit, my friend purchased two remarkable mixed-media graphic works by a German artist for only €65 each. Visitors can also have artworks professionally framed in the gallery’s own workshop, making the space both a gallery and a centre for craftsmanship.

By the time I left, I no longer felt I was saying goodbye to a stranger. I was leaving someone who had generously opened both his gallery and his world.

To complete the day, I checked into Bela Vista Hotel & Spa, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Sitting beneath its striped parasols, watching the afternoon light fall across the water, I couldn’t help thinking of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The atmosphere has that rare quality of making summer feel like an entire season of life rather than simply a holiday. Elegant without trying too hard, timeless without feeling old.

If staying at Bela Vista stretches your budget, there is an excellent alternative just across the road. Caffeine serves outstanding coffee and relaxed brunches in a simple, welcoming setting. Sometimes the

best travel recommendations are also the simplest ones.

As I drove away from Portimão, I realised I hadn’t spent the day searching for galleries.

I had spent it searching for people.

And perhaps that is where the best art always begins.
