As reported by Portimão City Council, this year’s edition will once again transform the Arade riverfront into a showcase for the region’s culinary heritage, with grilled sardines taking centre stage alongside cooking demonstrations, regional produce and a packed programme of concerts.

Gastronomy

Five local associations will be responsible for serving the event’s signature dish, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy the Festival Plate for €12.50, comprising five grilled sardines, bread, boiled potatoes and traditional Algarve salad. Drinks are sold separately, while additional food stalls will offer regional delicacies, desserts, and local products.

A longstanding highlight of the festival, the historic sardine landing re-enactment at Gil Eanes Quay will open the celebrations on the morning of 4 August. During the production, organisers will distribute 3,000 free vouchers, each redeemable for two sardines served in bread and a drink. The vouchers can be used at participating association stands between 4 and 9 August from 6pm onwards.

Daily live cooking demonstrations, organised in partnership with the Confraria Gastronómica da Sardinha de Portimão, will begin at 7.30pm, with guest chefs presenting innovative recipes centred on the city’s iconic fish, and visitors will also have the chance to sample the dishes alongside Algarve wines after each session.

Entertainment

Music remains one of the festival’s biggest attractions, with free headline performances taking place every evening from 10pm.

The programme opens with Matias Damásio on 4 August, followed by Némanus on 5 August, Átoa on 6 August, Cuca Roseta on 7 August, Fernando Daniel on 8 August, before legendary Portuguese rock band Xutos & Pontapés close the festival on 9 August.

Additionally, entertainment will extend beyond the main stage, with performances taking place at various locations across the city, such as the Jardim 1º de Dezembro and Palco Sardinha, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the evening.

Families are also catered for through the return of Petinga Park, a dedicated children’s area operating daily between 7pm and 11.45pm, including workshops and activities designed for those aged between 12 months and 12 years, free of charge.

Historic connection

According to Portimão City Council, the Festival da Sardinha has become one of the municipality’s flagship cultural and tourism events, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each summer while commemorating the city’s historic connection to the fishing industry and sardine canning, once among the Algarve’s most important economic sectors.

Furthermore, the event also plays a crucial role in supporting local associations and promoting regional gastronomy during the peak tourist season.

The festival takes place daily between 6pm and 1am along Portimão riverside, near Avenida Guanaré, with organisers expecting another strong turnout for an event that is considered one of the Algarve’s defining summer celebrations.
